Leonard Williams to Jets: Twitter Reacts as DT Is Selected in 2015 NFL Draft

Joseph ZuckerApr 30, 2015

The rich got richer Thursday night as the New York Jets added Leonard Williams to what was already a great defensive line. The Jets picked the USC Trojans defensive lineman sixth overall in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft.

According to Scout.com's Jamie Newberg, Williams is the 78th Trojans player selected in the first round, which puts USC further ahead of the next-closest school:

ESPN's Chris Mortensen noted how this is part of a larger trend for the Jets:

Most experts pegged Williams as one of the top players in the draft, period. Few expected him to go in the first two picks, but that was largely because the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans both needed quarterbacks. Williams' fall to sixth was certainly unexpected.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport figures the Jets' front office is over the moon with Williams falling into their laps:

General manager Mike Maccagnan said as much, per Dennis Waszak Jr. of the Associated Press:

Field Yates of ESPN feels sorry for the offensive linemen in the AFC East:

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora won't be surprised if New York makes somebody like Muhammad Wilkerson available with Williams' arrival imminent:

Maccagnan denied the idea that the Jets are going out of their way to move Wilkerson, per ESPN's Josina Anderson:

Whether Wilkerson stays or goes, Lindsay Jones of USA Today still wonders whether the Jets' quarterback problems will continue to hold the franchise back:

One of the bigger question marks surrounding Williams is his shoulder after he had surgery for a torn labrum in 2014. FanDuel's Will Carroll added a little perspective to the situation:

When it comes to the first round, pundits and fans fall into two camps: those who think you draft based on need and those who think you draft based on value. The Jets certainly fell into the latter category, as Williams didn't address a major need but was clearly the best player on the board.

Issues obviously remain on the offensive side of the ball, but if New York can deal Wilkerson for a few assets, then it can attempt to solve those problems down the line.
