Monday's Game to Watch: New York Islanders at Washington Capitals (Game 7)

The Islanders seized the advantage in this series with a solid 4-1 victory on the road in Game 1, which seemed to serve as a wake-up call for the Capitals.

Since that game, they had played hard-nosed and aggressive hockey and seemed to have the best of the series after taking a 3-2 series advantage in Game 5.

But Jack Capuano's Islanders were one of the surprise teams in the league through the majority of the season and played one of their best games at home in Game 6 to keep their hopes alive. The Islanders used a tough, hard-hitting game to establish their presence, and when John Tavares scored on a beautiful wrist shot in the first period, they gained the confidence to play with the Caps and remain in the series.

That came to fruition when Nikolai Kulemin scored the game-winning goal in the third period. The Capitals defense left Kulemin alone in front of the net as they tended to Tavares, and Kulemin was able to get the best of goaltender Braden Holtby.

Holtby and Islanders goalie Jaroslav Halak will both have a huge influence in this decisive game. Halak was at his best in Game 6, stopping 38 of 39 shots, while Holtby stopped 35 of 37 (New York also scored into an empty net).

The Capitals will look to Alexander Ovechkin to set the tone and lead the offense. Ovechkin scored 53 goals during the regular season and has two goals and two assists in this series. However, the Islanders have held him to one assist in the last two games.

Much of that is due to the outstanding defensive work done by Johnny Boychuk, who has become the Islanders' best defenseman. If Boychuk can keep Ovechkin in check in the seventh game, the Islanders have an excellent chance of surviving the series on the road.

However, if Ovechkin breaks loose, it seems the Capitals will survive and advance.

Look for the Islanders to prevail in a 3-2 decision.

The winner of this series will play the New York Rangers in the conference semifinal.
