Preview
Two teams are on the brink of elimination on Wednesday night, but one of them will survive.
The Ottawa Senators have been hard-luck losers in the past two games of their series against the Montreal Canadiens, losing in overtime twice, but I think they'll finally get a win in Game 4.
They'll certainly keep fighting, as Ottawa forward Bobby Ryan told Lisa Wallace of The Canadian Press (h/t the Toronto Star):
"Our backs were against the wall for the last 40 games or 30 games, or whatever it was, and the guys responded. I think you draw on that experience and where we were and how every game was a must-win. Now it really is. That’s the reality of the situation so we’re not comfortable with it, but we’re prepared for it.
"
Indeed, as Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun writes, the Senators have proven to be resilient to this point:
"Do you believe in miracles? It's not like the Senators haven't pulled one off before.
They've already rewritten the NHL history books once by overcoming a 14-point deficit to make the playoffs so even though they're trailing 3-0 to the Montreal Canadiens after a 2-1 OT loss in Game 3 Sunday night at the Canadian Tire Centre, there weren't many people writing them off Monday morning.
"
I certainly won't be. Look for the Sens to pull one back against the Habs. Whether they can win more than one game in this series, of course, remains to be seen.
The series between the New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins has been compelling, and you just get the sense that if the Pens could stop killing themselves with dumb penalties, they could pull off the upset. While I think the Rangers will ultimately advance, I think the Pens are good enough to make them really work for it.
They'll win a tight Game 4 behind another big performance from captain Sidney Crosby.
Out West, the Anaheim Ducks will wrap things up against a Winnipeg Jets squad that has forgotten how to play hockey in the third period.
In the first two periods of Games 1-3, the Jets have given up four goals. In the third periods of this series, they've sacrificed six. Not only that, but they've led each game going into the final period and blown that lead each and every time.
At some point, a failure to close out games breaks a team's spirit. I don't see the Jets recovering in this series, especially after giving up three leads and losing in overtime in Game 3. The Ducks will move on.
Meanwhile, the St. Louis Blues will even things up against the Minnesota Wild. In a series that has ebbed and flowed between the teams and hasn't had the slew of tight games we've seen in other series, the Blues are due up for a strong performance.
They don't really have a choice—going down 3-1 in this series, even with two more potential home games, would likely be a death sentence against a very good Wild team.
The Blues will step up and even this series.
