Following the selection, Titans general manager Ruston Webster spoke about the choice to select the Oregon signal caller:
Webster also spoke about the possibility of moving Mariota to another franchise, telling Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean: "We're not trading him."
Mariota is a rare athlete for a player at his position, evident in the 4.52-second 40-yard dash he posted at the NFL Scouting Combine, per NFL.com.
But the dual-threat signal-caller is far from just a runner. At 6'4" and 222 pounds, Mariota has prototypical NFL size and a rocket arm to make all of the necessary throws at the professional level.
Bleacher Report draft expert Matt Miller alluded to Mariota's ball-security issues that need to be cleaned up:
Although Mariota's skill set suggests he can shine in the years to come, he does come from a more simplistic spread offense. It's a stigma a lot of top modern QB prospects have to deal with, but Mariota seems to have the intangibles, work ethic and acumen to make the transition to more complex schematics.
Tennessee has a fine line to toe as it prepares to get Mariota ready for the 2015 campaign. The offense could be tailored to capitalize on Mariota's unique mobility but hopefully not at the cost of developing him as more of a pure pocket passer.
Mariota enters a roster that featured Zach Mettenberger as the projected starter for next season. Mariota would seemingly provide an immediate upgrade to a Titans roster in need of a facelift at a number of positions.
As fleet of foot as Mariota is, he'll have to protect himself from the brutal hits he'll be vulnerable to as a ball-carrier.
If he can stay healthy, pick up the Titans system and persevere as a student of the game, there's plenty of reason to believe Mariota can have tremendous success in the NFL.
