Weddle Comments on Relationship with Chargers
Tuesday, June 16
Weddle read from a prepared statement Tuesday, saying: "I want everyone to know my integrity and character mean everything," per Marty Caswell of the Darren Smith Show.
Weddle went on to say "It's obvious I'm not part of their long-term plans," per Caswell, and said that if the two sides didn't reach a deal by camp, he would become a free agent and not hold talks with the team during the season, according to Caswell.
Despite that stance, Weddle did say he wanted to be a Charger "forever," according to Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego.
The safety's comments come after David Canter, Weddle's agent, told ESPN.com's Eric D. Williams on June 15 that his client would participate in all activities at minicamp.
Chargers general manager Tom Telesco spoke to Williams on June 12 about Weddle's contract situation:
"We said before the draft that we would talk after the draft. And we did. And we talked multiple times. We listened to their concerns about his current contract. We listened to their complaints about playing too much. And we read through their statistical analysis and their financial comparisons.
We went through all of that stuff. We just decided that we’re just not at their numbers right now. It’s really as simple as that. There’s no sinister agenda there, nothing like that. Just right now it’s not there.
"
Weddle is a three-time Pro Bowler and a two-time first-team All-Pro. The 30-year-old veteran is slated to have a 2015 cap figure of $10.1 million, per Spotrac. It appears he wants to finish his career in San Diego, but Weddle the Chargers front office has allegedly spurned him in negotiating a fresh deal.
Although players such as Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates get more attention, Weddle has been a franchise cornerstone on the defensive side of the ball and a key leader for the Chargers in recent years. Weddle hasn't missed a game in the past five seasons and is one of the team captains.
The Chargers have had enough talent to contend for a Super Bowl for most of the time Rivers has been a starter (since 2006) and when Weddle has patrolled the secondary (since 2007). They just haven't quite put it together, and now they seem on the precipice of losing their star safety.
