Royals-A's Tension Results in 100 MPH Heater Thrown Behind Brett Lawrie

Kyle NewportApr 19, 2015

Although it appeared that the score between Oakland A's third baseman Brett Lawrie and the Kansas City Royals had been settled on Saturday, there was still a lot of bad blood at Kauffman Stadium on Sunday.

Things got started back up again when A's starter Scott Kazmir hit Royals outfielder Lorenzo Cain in the bottom of the first inning:

As a result of the play, the umpire warned both benches. Kazmir was not ejected, but Royals manager Ned Yost and pitching coach Dave Eiland were both tossed.

That was just the start of a wild day in Kansas City.

In the top of the eighth inning, Royals flamethrower Kelvin Herrera threw a pitch behind Lawrie. Herrera, who was immediately ejected, escalated things even more when he pointed at his head while jawing at Lawrie as he walked off the field.

Update from Tuesday, April 21

Herrera has been suspended and fined for throwing at Lawrie, according to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal:

Royals acting manager and bench coach Don Wakamatsu and shortstop Alcides Escobar were also thrown out during the second incident.

Oakland players were furious with Herrera after the game. Lawrie had some strong things to say about the Kansas City reliever, via CSN's Brodie Brazil:

A's reliever Sean Doolittle took to Twitter to weigh in on the matter:

The game ended with a 4-2 win for Kansas City. The Royals and A's will meet again in Oakland June 26-28.
