Teams to Watch

You can make a strong argument that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers should draft Marcus Mariota.

He's the safer bet off of the field and will likely be a reliable face of the franchise, for one. Offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter has a history with an uptempo, spread attack as well. Mariota is a player who fits more closely into the Russell Wilson mold, aka a player who will use his legs wisely to extend plays or break down a defense, not as a crutch and at the expense of going through his read progressions.

Washington Huskies coach Chris Peterson, who faced him in Pac-12 action this season, certainly thinks highly of him, per NFL Media PR on Twitter:

No matter what happens at No. 1, the Tennessee Titans will have a very fascinating decision to make. If Jameis Winston drops to No. 2, they'll almost assuredly select him, since he's a fit for the system they run. If it's Mariota, however, who is much less of a fit, the Titans may look to trade.

Who might fit in that scenario?

Well, the San Diego Chargers have emerged as a possibility, per Michael Gelken of U-T San Diego, with Philip Rivers not thrilled about the team's potential move in the future to Los Angeles. Could a Rivers for Mariota swap materialize?

It certainly seems as though Rivers' days in San Diego are numbered. Consider this excerpt from Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego:

"

The Chargers should get the No. 2 pick from the Tennessee Titans, select Mariota, then take a running back with the No. 17 pick. Start over in a big way.

Yes, the Chargers in all likelihood would keep their first round pick should they deal Rivers to Tennessee. They may, according to some around the league, have to throw in a selection in a later round. But people are really just speculating, since there is no precedent for trading a quarterback of Rivers’ stature at this juncture in his career for a draft pick(s).

It can, however, be done. It should be.

There is no way I thought I’d write this. Ever.

My fondness for Rivers the person and the player is well known. I wrote in my first column three years ago that I planned to cover every game of his career. We partnered last season on a campaign that raised $112,000 for the Ronald McDonald House. I don’t need a full hand to count the number of professional athletes I’ve known with his quality of character.

"

The subtext here is pretty simple: Acee, a Chargers beat writer who has known and respected Rivers for a long time, likely knows the quarterback absolutely wants out and thinks the team should grant him his wish while it can.

That makes San Diego a team to keep an eye on as the draft approaches. It would likely have interest in Winston as well if Rivers maintains his insistence that he won't sign a contract extension with the Bolts. Of course, it remains to be seen if the Titans would want a 33-year-old quarterback in exchange for a young player who could be a stud for the next decade or so.

The Cleveland Browns have to be considered as well. They hold two first-round picks and have never really seemed sold on Johnny Manziel.

Then, there are the Philadelphia Eagles, who don't seem to have the assets needed to trade up to No. 2, but you know, never assume anything when it comes to the mad scientist Chip Kelly.

The Houston Texans have a very good roster but nobody to lead it from the quarterback position, so they could be a surprise player in this bidding war.

What if Mariota or Winston drops past No. 2? Suddenly, the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Oakland Raiders and Washington will become very popular teams ahead of the New York Jets, who would surely take Mariota or Winston with the No. 6 pick.

Finally, watch out for the New Orleans Saints. No, they probably won't get involved in the great quarterback chase, seeing as they have that Drew Brees guy, but with two first-round picks, they have a lot of room to do some moving and shaking in the first round. If they fall in love with a player, they have the tools to go up and get him.
