Cain Placed on 15-Day Disabled List

Friday, August 28

In a corresponding move, the Giants recalled pitcher Chris Heston from Triple-A. Heston is scheduled to start Sunday against the St. Louis Cardinals, per the Giants.

Cain finished July with a 4.50 ERA, but that mark has steadily ballooned over the past four weeks. Not only has he failed to record a win since the start of August, but Cain has allowed five or more earned runs in three of his last five starts.

The 30-year-old's most recent outing came on Aug. 25 against the Chicago Cubs, when he surrendered six earned runs—including two home runs—in five innings of an 8-5 loss.

Cain missed the early portion of the season after being placed on the disabled list with a flexor tendon strain in his throwing arm and didn't make his debut until July 2 as a result. The issue was discovered after feeling some discomfort after finishing up his spring training slate.

Now, he's an injury concern once again as the team awaits more details. He's been one of the most durable pitchers in baseball throughout his career. Before last year, he had eight straight seasons of at least 30 starts. He made just 15 last year due to elbow trouble.

Since taking the mound on July 2, Cain has gone 2-4, with a 6.15 ERA and 1.58 WHIP.

Of course, the Giants will hope he's able to make a swift recovery and avoid any further problems. More updates will be provided as they become available.
