NFL Mock Draft 2015: Projections for 1st-Round Prospects as Pro Days Conclude

Sean ODonnellApr 6, 2015

The importance of pro days in the draft's evaluation process can't be stressed enough. While the scouting combine gives teams an up-close look at many top prospects, pro days allow interested NFL personnel to focus their attention on one specific player, allowing for a more scrutinized observation.

Most school and individual pro days took place throughout the month of March, and now that we're nearing the end of the first week of April, only Florida, Syracuse and UTEP have yet to host their workouts—Indiana running back Tevin Coleman has an upcoming personal pro day as well.

So, how did the draft's premier prospects fare? Well, there was some mixed results, and big boards have shifted in the aftermath. Here's a look at how the first round is likely to shake out based on the offseason workouts we've seen as pro days conclude.

Analyzing Recent Pro-Day Performances

Pro days began in early March, and some notable prospects stood out. Minnesota tight end Maxx Williams looked like a first-round selection, Clemson's Vic Beasley continued to rise up draft boards, USC's Leonard Williams solidified himself as a top-three pick and many other players produced noteworthy workouts. That trend continued later in the month and into April.

Here's a look at some notable performances from top players who participated in recent pro days.

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State

The 6'4", 231-pound Jameis Wiston impressed at the combine, but his pro day drew mixed reviews. While he was accurate during passing drills for the most part, he struggled when asked to throw on the move. However, the quarterback made up for any errant passes by finishing his workout with some impressive red-zone tosses. Barring any new or lingering concerns over his off-field issues, Winston should go No. 1 overall.

7. Chicago Bears: Danny Shelton, DT, Washington

Danny Shelton looks every bit the part of a dominant NFL defensive tackle. The 6'2", 339-pounder was put through a rigorous workout at Washington's pro day, and while he was fatigued by the end, he displayed his ability to move very well. Shelton is likely a top-10 pick in this year's draft and could be a fit for a Bears team that really needs a big interior presence on its defensive line.

16. Houston Texans: La'el Collins, OT, LSU

La'el Collins is known for his brute force along the line of scrimmage, making him a candidate to be a right tackle in the NFL. However, at 6'4" and 305 pounds with a great deal of power, teams may consider him at guard as well. Collins looked very athletic and moved well during his pro day's positional drills. He should be high on the list for a first-round team in need of versatility and depth along its offensive line.

22. Pittsburgh Steelers: Marcus Peters, CB, Washington

Marcus Peters was dismissed from Washington in 2014 due to altercations with the staff; however, he made amends and participated at the school's pro day. The 6'0", 197-pound cornerback impressed, showing good hip fluidity, coming out of his breaks cleanly and displaying good ball skills. Peters has the potential to be a No. 1 corner in the NFL, and he could receive a long look from a Steelers team in need of secondary upgrades.

23. Detroit Lions: Eddie Goldman, DT, Florida State

Eddie Goldman didn't work out at the combine, but the 6'4", 336-pound defensive tackle impressed at his pro day. He ran a 5.27-second 40-yard dash, recorded a 26" vertical jump, ran a 4.87-second 20-yard shuttle and a 7.62-second three-cone drill. He topped that off by showing good strength and agility during positional drills. Goldman could be the choice at No. 23 for a Lions team that lost both its defensive tackles during free agency.

32. New England Patriots: Cameron Erving, C, Florida State

CHARLOTTE, NC - DECEMBER 06: Cameron Erving #75 of the Florida State Seminoles takes the fied for warmups before their Atlantic Coast Conference championship game against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Bank of America Stadium on December 6, 2014 in G

The 6'5", 313-pound Cameron Erving has been an intriguing prospect due to his versatility; however, he has only two years of experience at offensive tackle. He appears best suited to play center in the NFL, but he worked out at both center and tackle during his pro day. He performed well during positional drills, showing good movement and foot quickness. It may have been just enough to earn a spot in the first round.
