CFL's Montreal Alouettes '50-50' on Signing Sam
Wednesday, April 1
Although there seemingly hasn't been any movement on the NFL front for Sam, the 25-year-old defensive end looks to have a spot in the CFL if he wants it.
According to Herb Zurkowsky of the Montreal Gazette, Montreal Alouettes general manager Jim Popp wants to sign Sam and believes it is possible they will come to terms:
"The CFL is cut out perfectly for his style. It would give him the opportunity to do what he does best. His agent knows. They're ready. They know this (CFL) may be what it is. It's Michael who has to make the decision—and he might never come. The indications were he was ready to come last fall, and he's still not with us. So I really don't know. Seriously, I'd say our chances are 50-50.
"
While it is clear Popp would like to secure the former seventh-round draft pick of the St. Louis Rams, Sam has yet to make a decision.
In what could be a good sign for the Alouettes, though, Sam left the door open for playing in the CFL when asked about it following the veteran combine, per NFL.com's Marc Sessler:
One can only assume Sam is holding out hope for an NFL offer, but it may never come.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk thinks the move to the CFL would be the right one for Sam:
"If Sam wants to play in the NFL, it should be more like 100-0. Unwanted by the NFL after leaving Penn State in 2005, Cameron Wake went to the CFL, became a star pass rusher, signed with the Dolphins in 2008, and became a star pass rusher.
So if Sam is serious about getting to the NFL, Sam can show up for the Veteran Combine every year and wait for a call that’s never going to come, or he can go to the CFL and try to play his way to the NFL. Of course, there’s a chance he may fail. But if he’s determined to get to the NFL, that shouldn’t stop him from trying.
"
If it becomes apparent the NFL isn't an option right now, then signing with the CFL and attempting to pique the interest of NFL teams from north of the border could be an appealing possibility.
