Adam Wainwright Injury: Updates on Cardinals Star's Ankle, Achilles and Return

St. Louis Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright has been fighting injuries on a nearly constant basis since late 2014. The veteran was placed on the disabled list after he came up limping after batting against the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday. On Monday, it was revealed he will miss the season with a torn left Achilles tendon.

Wainwright Out for Season with Torn Left Achilles, Moved to 60-Day DL

Monday, April 27

MLBRosterMoves confirmed that the Cardinals transferred Wainwright to the 60-day disabled list. According to general manager John Mozeliak, his surgery "went well," and they "still expect him back in 10-12 months," according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch provided more comments from Mozeliak:

"

[There were] no surprises, which was probably the best news, and they didn't have to use any extra material to reattach the tendon. If the tear is not perfectly straight, there are times where a surgeon may have to use something else to reattach the tendon. But this was not the case.

"

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on April 27 that "Wainwright has a torn Achilles in left foot. Surgery this week, per Mozeliak. Out for season." 

Langosch confirmed the news from Mozeliak:

Langosch also confirmed that Wainwright would have surgery on Thursday to repair the damage.

On April 26, the Cardinals announced they placed Wainwright on the 15-day DL "with a left low ankle and Achilles injury. Cody Stanley is recalled-will be MLB debut." 

Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, citing sources, previously reported, "Expectation is that #STLCards' Wainwright is done for season with Achilles injury. Has not yet undergone MRI."

Mozeliak spoke to Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch about Wainwright's status following the announcement:

"

"We'll know for sure tomorrow," said Mozeliak by phone Sunday morning from St. Louis. But he said the information he had received from the team's medical staff Saturday night pointed to an Achilles injury. ... 

"Whether it's strained or torn.  . . I don't think it's good news. No," said Mozeliak.

"I don't like to speculate until you have the full information, but if you ask me how I feel. . . not good. All those rumors floating around seem to have some validity to them."

Saturday, Scott Miller of Bleacher Report noted that Wainwright left the game, limping badly, after an at-bat. The Cardinals announced it as an ankle injury that he will have re-evaluated when the team returns to St. Louis. Langosch reported the MRI was scheduled for Monday.

Hummel provided a statement from Wainwright on the possibility of missing the season:

"

That would be real tough, especially the way I was starting to feel. It was by far the best I've felt this year. That's the hardest part, knowing that I was making such good adjustments and now I've got a setback.

I've never had anything down there to compare it to. I'm thinking what in the heck just hit me. I thought the catcher's mask must have hit me. Or the bat must have hit me.

It was crazy. I wasn't even going that hard. I just popped it up.

I saw that it was in play so I started to run and my foot just shut down on me. It's in the back of my ankle. Everything right now is all speculation. I've not got my hopes up or down.

"

Wainwright has endured his share of issues since the Cardinals reported to spring training in February. He suffered an abdominal strain on February 26 and didn't pitch in a game until March 21. While he's currently 2-1 with a 1.44 ERA so far this season, the injuries are concerning.

After the 2014 season ended, Wainwright underwent a minor procedure on his pitching elbow to repair an issue with cartilage. Despite some of the wear and tear on his arm, the 33-year-old has shown no signs of slowing down.

Since 2012, Wainwright has made at least 32 starts with 198.2 innings and 184 strikeouts each season. He's finished in the top three of National League Cy Young Award voting in the last two seasons.

His loss for the remainder of the year is a major blow to the Cardinals.
