3 Players Borussia Dortmund Should Spend Big on This Summer
Although there is still plenty left for Dortmund to fight over this season, Jurgen Klopp and his backroom staff will undoubtedly already be looking towards the summer transfer window and licking their lips in delight.
The Westfalenstadion side may ultimately fail to reach a top-four spot in the Bundesliga and therefore miss the UEFA Champions League next season, but that should have little effect on its ability to sign players to long-term deals.
Dortmund are still one of the most enticing clubs in world football at the moment, and this summer should prove to be another busy one of acquiring new talent for next season's campaign.
Here are the three players Klopp should spend big on this summer.
Mattia De Sciglio
1 of 3
Dortmund desperately need a new left-back. Marcel Schmelzer is a decent player but offers nothing quite like the talent needed in that part of the team.
Similarly, Erik Durm hasn’t looked like the promising player that he once was, and even once he does return to form, Klopp is expected to shuffle him over to his preferred right side.
As such, Dortmund need a new first-choice left-back, and few would make for a better alternative than Milan defender Mattia De Sciglio.
There’s little doubt the 22-year-old would be interested in a move to the Westfalenstadion, and with pace and technique to burn, he would undoubtedly slot straight into Klopp’s style of play.
Gregory Van Der Wiel
2 of 3
Although we’ve already discussed the idea of Dortmund signing a new full-back, Klopp shouldn’t simply stop at upgrading his left flank. The right-back position is in much need of reinvestment, and Gregory van der Wiel of PSG would make an excellent addition.
The Dutch international has had an okay time of things in Paris, but at 27 years of age, he certainly has plenty more to offer and plenty of promise still untapped.
Although Dortmund do have Lukasz Piszczek, the Polish international is far from able enough to hold down the position for an entire season. Spend the cash on this Dutch star, and let him and Piszczek fight over a spot in the team that desperately needs some competition.
Arturo Vidal
3 of 3
As easily the most high profile of the three players mentioned today, Juventus’ Arturo Vidal comes in as something of a "best-case scenario” kind of signing.
Whether Dortmund could tempt one of the Old Lady’s best players is a debate worth having on another day, but instead, we should focus on what Vidal could add to this Dortmund side.
Although Klopp already has Ilkay Gundogan and Nuri Sahin, he desperately needs a third option in midfield that isn’t Sven Bender or Sebastian Kehl.
Fork out for Vidal, play him in a midfield trio with Gundogan and Sahin, and watch Dortmund return to the dominating team it once was.
