Hedo Turkoglu or Vince Carter: Did The Magic Improve?
Ever since the Orlando Magic decided on which direction they wanted to go this off season, everyone has wondered if the moves they made actually improved their team. Since then, I have had my opinion on the roster moves and respected the opinions of others.
However I recently saw a poll on RedsArmy.com. The question asked "Will the Orlando Magic be better or worse in 2010?" The only two options for the answers are "Better.. Vince Carter is the man" and "Worse.. they will miss Hedo".
It's polls like this, or people who say "Hedo is more versatile than Carter so the Magic will be worse" that show the ignorance of some fans.
A basketball team is more than one player and is more than the starting five. A basketball team should be judged on the team as a whole.
With that said, the Orlando Magic are a better team than they were last year.
The Magic lost a promising young player in Courtney Lee, an injured Jameer Nelson's replacement in Rafer Alston, a clutch big man that can shoot the 3 ball and Tony Battie who played a very minor role for the Magic.
They added a high flying shooting guard that can score 20 per game when healthy in Vince Carter, a young 6'10 forward coming off a great rookie year who can rebound and score, and another big man that can grab boards and score off the bench in Brandon Bass.
Add to that a great defenseman that can score off the bench and great overall player in Matt Barnes, and a veteran point guard with the "pass first" mentality in Jason Williams.
These players meshed in with Superman, Gortat, Lewis, Nelson, Reddick and Pietrus form a great team.
So feel free to have an opinion on who is better, Carter or Hedo; but realize that the Orlando Magic will need to rely on their whole roster. If so, their season will not depend on the loss of Turkoglu and the addition of Carter.
