Mike Hoffman Passes Martin Havlat for 5th Place on Senators' Rookie Points List

Bleacher Report MilestonesMar 23, 2015

Ottawa Senators forward Mike Hoffman scored his 43rd point of the season during Saturday's 5-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, moving him past Martin Havlat for the fifth-most points by a rookie in team history, per Sportsnet Stats.

The 25-year-old winger ended a six-game streak without points in impressive fashion, as he slid a wrist shot past Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer to open the game's scoring in the first period.

The goal was Hoffman's 25th of the season, with 18 assists bringing him to a total of 43 points.

A fifth-round draft pick in 2009, Hoffman has already proved to be quite the steal after recording 30 goals and 37 assists in just 51 games for AHL Binghamton last season.

He got a taste of the NHL in 2013-14, tallying three points and three assists in 25 games. He had previously played one game in 2011-12 and three games in 2012-13, failing to score a point in any of those four appearances.

Hoffman didn't play enough games in any of those seasons to ruin his rookie eligibility, and he now leads all NHL freshmen in goals.

Despite the remarkable season, Hoffman is unlikely to win the Calder Trophy for rookie of the year, with Calgary Flames forward Johnny Gaudreau looking like the favorite to take home the award.

Other candidates include Nashville Predators forward Filip Forsberg, Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad and Winnipeg Jets goaltender Michael Hutchinson, but Gaudreau's recent hot streak should give him the edge.
