Bills Hopeful About Retaining Spikes
Friday, March 27
Vic Carucci of The Buffalo News reported Bills GM Doug Whaley is hopeful Spikes will return to the team.
Speaking on the NFL Network, via Carucci on March 18, Spikes admitted he wants to play in Buffalo even though he understands the new regime with Rex Ryan may go in a different direction:
Ryan has a knack for transforming a defense using his players, so Spikes may not fit into what the new coach wants from a scheme-fit perspective. Spikes did play in a chameleon scheme in New England, that constantly shifted from 4-3 to 3-4, with varying degrees of success.
In response to a fan question, B/R's Matt Miller noted Spikes does have a limited skill set that could be a reason his market hasn't really developed despite being in his prime years:
Spikes has only been a part-time starter the last two years, coming off the bench 11 times in 32 games, giving credence to the idea he's not a great three-down linebacker.
Unless the Bills are seeking depth at linebacker, which may or may not be the case even after trading Kiko Alonso, Spikes may have to find a job elsewhere if he's hoping to play significant time in 2015.
