NASCAR Xfinity Series at California 2015: Full Schedule, Standings and Preview

R. Cory SmithMar 19, 2015

Youth is most certainly being served this season in the Xfinity Series. A 23-year-old driver sits atop the standings through four races—and he's the oldest competitor in the top five.

That driver is none other than Ty Dillon, who has steadily maintained his lead over the last three races. Behind him is a contingent that includes Chris Buescher, Daytona winner Ryan Reed, 2014 champion Chase Elliott and Rookie of the Year contender Darrell Wallace Jr.

Elliott is still recovering from a poor result in Daytona but has two top fives and another top 10 since the opener. Heading into Auto Club Speedway, Elliott, Dillon and the rest of the youth movement will look to knock off Sprint Cup regulars to win.

Dillon and Elliott have a rivalry that dates back to the 2013 season. While Elliott drove in just his first full-time season last year, he still had a dust-up with Dillon prior to his dominant season in the Xfinity Series.

Two years ago, Elliott spun Dillon in Bowmanville, Ontario, and ultimately won his first race at the Camping World Truck Series level. Though both have moved up to the Xfinity level since, Dillon made it clear he hasn't forgotten about the incident last week.

"I like Chase outside the car, he's a good dude," Dillon said, via Kenny Bruce of NASCAR.com. "But he took me out of the championship two years ago and I think he still needs to understand that I haven't forgotten."

That loss kept Dillon from winning the trucks title, ultimately finishing second to Matt Crafton. At the time, Dillon told The Associated Press (via ESPN.com), "I hope he runs Iowa (next week). He won't finish the race."

We haven't seen that come to fruition to this point, as both have remained successful drivers. But with the two drivers looking like clear-cut contenders for the title this season, the intensity is bound to be ratcheted up soon.

The two drivers made contact again in Phoenix that left both slightly upset, as Bob Pockrass of ESPN passes along:

Expect a similar battle for position in Fontana with the top five in the standings separated by just 25 points. With three of those drivers already clinching two top-five results, the front of the pack should have a wealth of young drivers scattered throughout.

However, the top two from last season consisted of Kyle Larson and Kevin Harvick, both of whom are entered into this year's event. The two Sprint Cup drivers will look for another win, but it's the battle behind them that will be worth watching.
