Bills Sign Clay to Offer Sheet
Tuesday, March 17
On Tuesday, Vic Carucci of The Buffalo News broke the news that the free-agent tight end and the Buffalo Bills agreed to an offer sheet.
The Bills confirmed the deal and noted that Miami now has until midnight Sunday to decide whether to match the Bills' offer, which is a five-year, $38 million deal with $20 million-plus in guarantees, according to Carucci and Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports:
The Dolphins made a previous offer to Clay, but Michael Silver of NFL Network reported that deal paled in comparison to the Bills' potential contract, coming in at four years and $27 million.
Clay, 26, made 58 receptions for 605 yards and three touchdowns last season. A reliable pass-catcher, Pro Football Focus' measurements had Clay fourth among tight ends in drop rate, though he's struggled when asked to pass block.
While they remained interested in retaining Clay, Miami has already put a backup plan in place, signing tight end Jordan Cameron to a two-year deal. Cameron is two years removed from an 80-catch, 917-yard season, and he might wind up being the superior option overall if he stays healthy.
With the Bills paying Clay at a level that far exceeds his NFL production, it'll be interesting to see if Miami just allows him to walk and rolls the dice on Cameron in 2015.
