ESPN's Ben Goessling added that the Vikings don't plan to use a post-June 1 designation on Jennings at this time.
Jennings' release comes one day after the Vikings completed a trade with the Miami Dolphins to acquire fellow wideout Mike Wallace. Between their new weapon, the emerging Charles Johnson and what they hope is a rebound year from Cordarrelle Patterson, the group was overcrowded.
The 31-year-old Western Michigan product had just 59 catches for a shade under 750 yards and six touchdowns last year. He's still a reliable target at this stage of his career but far from the 1,000-yard lock he was during his peak seasons in Green Bay.
Exactly how much interest he'll generate on the open market is a mystery. Jennings can still help a team with a need at the position, but he very well may have to accept a team-friendly, short-term deal. It should become more clear in the days ahead.
