Gennady Golovkin vs. Willie Monroe Announced: Date, Comments, Reaction for Fight
Undefeated WBA and IBO Middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin has developed into one of boxing's most dominant fighters, and he will look to continue that in his upcoming clash with Willie Monroe Jr.
The Kazakh star announced on Twitter that he will take on the 28-year-old southpaw on May 16 at The Forum in Inglewood, California:
Monroe also commented on the announcement and his opponent, via BoxingNews24.com.
"“On May 16, I will shock the world,” said Monroe.
“I think this is an awesome fight. We have two contrasting styles and that will make for some spontaneous combustion. We will see which style comes out on top on May 16.”
"
GGG is a perfect 32-0, and he has won 29 of those contests by way of knockout. Monroe is much less experienced at 19-1, but he will ride a nine-fight winning streak into his meeting with Golovkin.
While the Rochester, New York native certainly isn't a big name in the boxing world, Damian Calhoun of The OC Register is impressed by the fact that Golovkin is a fighting champion:
Golovkin has an extremely impressive resume, including a silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. With so many accolades to his credit, he will undoubtedly be a massive favorite against Monroe.
At the same time, this is the opportunity of a lifetime for the underdog, and he will likely do everything possible to be prepared for the fight.
A Golovkin victory may seem likely, but there will be plenty of intrigue surrounding what looks to be a David vs. Goliath-esque battle on paper.
