Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network first reported that the sides were close to an agreement:
The San Diego Chargers selected the Clemson product in the second round of the 2011 draft. He racked up nearly 250 tackles to go along with 16 passes defended, five interceptions and three sacks in 62 games (40 starts) over four seasons.
Gilchrist should immediately earn into a starting spot for the Jets, though his exact role probably won't be clear until training camp given all of the changes in New York's secondary. He's a versatile defensive back with reliable tackling skills.
The Jets' secondary is certainly looking formidable after a string of moves. The corner trio of Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine should go a long way toward helping improve a unit that finished 14th against the pass last season.
Gilchrist and Calvin Pryor are the likely starting safeties. They probably won't play traditional roles, though. New head coach Todd Bowles and defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers are going to move them around the formation, whether dropping them in the box or shading them to the side opposite "Revis Island."
New York came into the offseason with a clear plan in mind to upgrade the secondary. It's fair to say that effort has been a success. Gilchrist is just the latest of several key additions.
