with a core of Kevin Durant, Jeff Green and Russell Westbrook do the thunder have what it takes to win a NBA championship
While the sonics/thunder have been rebuilding ever since the trade of Ray Allen. Have the thunder been taking the right steps to pursue a championship?
The trade of Ray Allen to the Boston Celtics, which, the sonics received Wally Szczerbiak, Delonte West and the 5th overall pick in the 2007 draft
With the second and the fifth overall pick in the 2007 draft the settle supersonics picked, Kevin Durant(2) and Jeff Green(5). also acquiring in the second round Carl Landry.
A big expectation was placed on the shoulders young Kevin Durant (18 years old) who had to fill the hole of not just the scoring punch of Ray Allen but also be the face of the franchise.
Once Ray Allen landed in Boston a big question mark was placed on Rashard Lewis's head, Should the Sonics re-sign Lewis? doing so the sonics/thunder would have 5 guys all playing the same spot.
Then the complex 3 team trade that sent Donlate West and Wally Szczerbiak packing to the Cleveland Cavaliers. In return the sonics got Ira Newble and Donyell Marshall. Ira who was then waived. Marshall who was waived last season.
with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 draft the Seattle supersonics pick Russell Westbrook.
some who thought it was a questionable move at the time(I was one).
then came the move of Seattle Supersonics to the Oklahoma City thunder which could cause mental trouble for a young rebuilding team and put them off track. Nick Collison, who was not pleased with the moving from Seattle to Oklahoma had a few words to say.
Things took a turn for the worst for the Newly nba team going 0-12, that lead to the fireing of coach PJ. when Coach scott Brooks came into the picture things took a turn for the best.
As the season progressed with the newest NBA team The
Oklahoma City Thunder saw just how much potential Westbrook has, Kevin Durant has shown he is an elite scorer in the league and took on the role of being a franchise player and Jeff Green who some think he isn't fit at the power forward position showed that he is capable of playing.
Again the thunder make another questionable pick, in picking James Harden. some were surprised that we didn't snatch up Ricky Rubio while we had the chance. James who will be a very nice side kick to Kevin Durant in the very near future.
With projects Ibeke and White showing glimpses of post presence this young Oklahoma City needs things are looking promising. While Kyle Weaver is coming along slowly he hasn't taken the leap he needs, never the less it is his only second season. Shaun Livingston who is trying to regain his reputation from a devastating knee injury back in his Clipper days is getting back on his feet and will be a solid backup point guard for Russell.
The Oklahoma City has a lot of youth, but is that necessarily a good thing?. This young and up coming team needs some vet experience on and off the court.
Sam Presti has shown little of it during the off-season by signing free agents Etan Thomas and Kevin Ollie.
While the thunder have a lot of cap space next off-season don't be too surprised if Presti doesn't make a big splash in the free agency. but do expect him to bring in some low profile, high locker room guys.
Keep your eye out for the thunder in upcoming season they will shock some people and will show that with their young and tight core consisting of Durant, Harden, Green and Westbrook could have what it takes to have a similar run like the
Portland Trail Blazers.
and will be a major threat in 2-3 years.
