Saints Reportedly Shopping Stills
Thursday, March 12
Dianna Marie Russini of NBC4 reported that the Saints have put Stills on the market:
Stills, who turns 23 next month, made 63 receptions for 931 yards and three touchdowns in 2014. He was first on the team in yardage and second behind only Jimmy Graham in receptions.
Of course, the Saints already moved on from Graham this offseason, trading him to Seattle along with a fourth-round pick for center Max Unger and a first-round selection. New Orleans also released stalwart running back Pierre Thomas and has agreed to deal guard Ben Grubbs to the Kansas City Chiefs, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler suggested there may be more moves to come and mentioned the only two untouchables:
While the other moves were likely made for cap purposes, trading Stills is a more curious move. The Oklahoma product is still playing on his rookie contract and will cost less than $1.4 million over the next two seasons on New Orleans' cap, per Spotrac. Given his emergent status as one of Drew Brees' favorite targets, it would have stood to reason that the Saints would look to keep Stills long term while possibly moving on from the declining Marques Colston.
Of course, New Orleans' willingness to deal Stills doesn't necessarily mean it'll get done. The Saints could be floating his name in hopes he can net another cheap, cost-controlled asset in this year's draft; he'd certainly command offers from teams looking to deal early-round selections. Consummated trade or not, though, it's clear Mickey Loomis is nowhere done wheeling and dealing.
