Brett Keisel Released by Steelers: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

On Monday, the Pittsburgh Steelers cut defensive lineman Brett Keisel, who has spent his entire 13-year career with the franchise.

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert made the news official on the team's website:

We have informed Brett Keisel that we plan to release him today. We have had conversations with Brett over the past couple of weeks during which we communicated our intentions to him. Brett has played a major role in our success during his 13 years in Pittsburgh. We appreciate his efforts and we are grateful for what he helped us accomplish, including two Super Bowl Championships. We will always consider him an all-time Pittsburgh Steeler.

Keisel, 36, appeared in 12 games in 2014 for the Steelers before being placed on season-ending injured reserve with a triceps injury, accumulating 17 tackles, a sack and an interception. In 156 career games, he's posted 408 tackles, 30 sacks, seven forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries.

The Steelers' decision to cut ties with Keisel shouldn't come as a huge surprise. He'll be 37 in September, and his play has started to decline. Saving cap space was the logical move, even if it wasn't easy releasing a player who has been such a steady force for Pittsburgh over the years. 

It remains to be seen whether Keisel will explore the market—and what type of interest he'll get in free agency—or if he will retire. But there's no questioning that he was a major part of Pittsburgh's defense for over a decade and will be remembered fondly in the city.
