Jackson Reportedly Will Remain with Bills

Monday, March 9

It appears Jackson will be sticking around despite speculation that he might be cut or traded following the arrival of McCoy.

Tim Graham of The Buffalo News provided the news:

Graham added that the Bills "have approached Fred Jackson about restructuring his contract, but they have told him they want him to stay."

However, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Jackson will stay with the organization and will not have any changes made to his contract.

Graham later provided a full breakdown of the situation:

"

The Buffalo Bills held discussions about what to do with Jackson, their four-time captain and most popular player of a barren era.

The idea of cutting him was debated in depth by the Bills' highest executives. The Bills' front office also wants to give Bryce Brown, acquired from the Eagles last year for a 2015 fourth-round draft choice, a better opportunity as McCoy's backup. The Bills want their third-string back to be a special-teams contributor, and that's where Anthony Dixon remains the best fit. Jackson doesn't play special teams

"

A source close to Jackson revealed, "We feel very comfortable with Fred's status on the team and his role and contributions going forward," per Shawn Stepner of WKBW-TV in Buffalo.

Jackson also commented on his Twitter account regarding his future:

Jackson, 34, played in 14 games for the Bills last season, rushing for 525 yards and two touchdowns. He also caught 66 passes for another 501 yards and a score, going over 1,000 yards from scrimmage for the fifth time in his career.

Of course, with the Bills trading for McCoy, it's very likely that Jackson would be returning solely in a backup role. And with the team also having Boobie Dixon and Bryce Brown on the roster, it remains uncertain just how many snaps Jackson would get with the team next year.

Graham had more on that front:

It certainly would be a good problem to have. Jackson's ability to produce in the passing game and his blocking make him a viable option as a third-down back, and his experience and leadership are valuable for a team looking to reach the postseason.

Jackson is also a fan favorite and was recently presented with the Jefferson Award for Public Service, highlighting his work in the community.

It still wouldn't be surprising if the Bills relented and ultimately cut Jackson. But for the time being, it appears the team desires to keep him around.
