Fitzpatrick Reportedly Traded to Jets

Wednesday, March 11

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that the Texans have traded Fitzpatrick to the Jets for a late-round conditional draft pick.

News of a potential trade to New York first broke on March 9, when Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported that the Jets were interested in trading for the veteran quarterback.

ESPN's Rich Cimini highlighted Fitzpatrick's ties to the Jets organization:

Fitzpatrick, 32, was acquired by the Texans last season when Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan was Houston's director of college scouting. Fitzpatrick played for offensive coordinator Chan Gailey in Buffalo, where Gailey served as the head coach from 2010 to 2012. Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News confirmed the Jets plan on pursuing Fitzpatrick when the new league year begins Tuesday.

The Harvard grad threw for 2,483 yards and 17 touchdowns against eight interceptions last season in Houston. Working under head coach Bill O'Brien, Fitzpatrick had by far the best statistical run of his career. He doubled his touchdown-to-interception ratio for the first time, while setting a career best in yards per attempt (7.96) and completion percentage (63.1).

Football Outsiders' DVOA metric ranked Fitzpatrick the 13th-best qualifying quarterback. Pro Football Focus' grades were equally kind, ranking him 12th. He was ahead of Russell Wilson, Matthew Stafford, Jay Cutler and a number of other notables in those metrics.
