Liverpool Transfer News: Glen Johnson Reveals Exit Talks, Latest Pedro Rumours

Nick AkermanMar 9, 2015

Glen Johnson has revealed that no talks have taken place with regards to extending his contract at Liverpool but that discussions have begun with an unnamed foreign club.

The attacking right-back admitted that he has "no idea" where he'll be playing next season, reported by James Pearce of the Liverpool Echo. "I do like the idea of going abroad," said the 30-year-old. "There have been talks. I'm still young and it would be great for the kids. But I'm not thinking about that at the moment. We will have to wait and see."

Johnson has been touted to follow in the footsteps of former Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole and move to Roma. Micah Richards is currently on loan at Fiorentina from Manchester City, so Johnson could potentially become the fourth Englishman in two seasons to join one of Serie A's top sides, with Ravel Morrison expected to join Lazio.

Brendan Rodgers' switch to something of a 3-5-2 has largely rendered Johnson useless this season. The Reds boss has favoured three powerful, ball-playing centre-backs and utilised a forward—such as Lazar Markovic or Jordon Ibe—in a multi-functional role on the wing.

Johnson has struggled with injury in recent times, but the quality of his performances has dropped off over the last two seasons. He laboured before and after last season's infamous 3-3 draw with Crystal Palace, which saw him receive heavy criticism in the aftermath.

He blasted naysayers as "sofa experts" and "absolutely clueless" after that fixture, per John Drayton of the MailOnline. He has failed to consistently impress under Rodgers, though. Johnson has only managed 10 Premier League starts in a season that has seen his England place surrendered to Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne.

It's certainly a smart move for him to look elsewhere. The former Chelsea player has the ability to be an effective outlet down the right flank, someone who can cause trouble when cutting inside. He needs to rediscover his confidence, however, as Liverpool's progression has left him behind.

The club are being linked with a move for seemingly unneeded Barcelona forward Pedro, a player who could slot into a wide attacking role for Rodgers. Even so, Blaugrana sports assessor Carles Rexach recently told Esport 3 (h/t Marca) that he expects the Spaniard to stay: "He is highly valued here, very important for Barca. I don't see Pedro away from Barca."

Interestingly, B/R UK's Sam Tighe doesn't place Johnson or Pedro in a potential dream lineup for Liverpool next season:

Johnson's road appears to have run out at Anfield, but Rodgers can be expected to bring plenty of other players in during the summer. Liverpool are two points behind fourth-placed Manchester United in the Premier League at present and have an FA Cup quarter-final replay against Blackburn Rovers to prepare for.

The current campaign could yield considerable success for Liverpool, although Johnson will likely see out his remaining time at the club with limited input.
