When asked about Beckham's comments on SiriusXM's "Opening Drive," Cruz revealed the advice that he gave his younger running mate, according to Nick Powell of NJ.com.

"

I just told him to make sure he watches his words and make sure that he's mindful of the things that he says, because anything that he says can be a headline. Anything that he talks about, they can take a snapshot of and it can become a headline so he just has to be very, very careful of that, even when he means well and wants to say the right things.

"

Beckham would be a star in any locale after catching 91 passes for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns in just 12 games as a rookie, but there are even more eyes on him in the New York market.

Per Powell, Cruz stressed the importance of remaining levelheaded publicly in order to avoid media backlash.

"

I just want him to keep a level head and make sure he keeps his family first and make sure he gets his mind right because this city and this media can sometimes swallow you whole. ... He's done a good job so far, he's a young kid and he's gonna make mistakes and do things that he's emotional about and things like that, but he's definitely a good kid and he's done a good job so far.

"

Cruz has had plenty of practice as a star player in New York, so Beckham has a huge asset at his disposal in terms of learning how to handle the attention and scrutiny.

For the most part, Cruz is a player who has let his on-field performances do the talking. Based on how dominant Beckham was last season, he would likely do well to follow a similar path.
