NFL Free Agency 2015: Latest Rumors, Predictions on Top Stars' Next Moves

Joseph ZuckerMar 8, 2015

It's impossible to win a Super Bowl in the offseason, but making one or two major splashes in free agency can help transform a team into a viable title contender. Plenty of head coaches and general managers are looking for that one signing that can put their side over the top.

With the talent available in the open market this year, it's not hard to see why many are taking such a cavalier attitude toward free agency.

Below are predictions for where three of the top stars might land this offseason.

Ndamukong Suh

The Detroit Lions always knew they'd have a tough fight on their hands to re-sign Ndamukong Suh, and when they decided not to franchise tag him, it opened up what will be a massive bidding war for the four-time first-team All-Pro defensive tackle.

Speaking on Bleacher Report's Team Stream Now, CSN Bay Area's Scott Bair threw the Oakland Raiders' name into the ring as a potential suitor.

The Raiders have a boatload of cap space, so they'd be able to pay a bit over the odds to ensure that Suh isn't turned off by the franchise's recent on-field struggles.

Although Oakland is a serious contender, the Miami Dolphins are arguably in pole position. Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported that Miami is going hard after the 28-year-old:

"

PFT continues to hear that the team with the best chance of landing Suh is the Dolphins.  And for good reason; owner Stephen Ross previously whiffed on coach Jim Harbaugh, quarterback Peyton Manning, and coach Jeff Fisher.  Ross wants to make a splash, as does new executive V.P. of football operations Mike Tannenbaum.

"

While the Dolphins have made the playoffs once since 2001, Miami is uniquely positioned to entice Suh. As Florio wrote, the Florida state tax code makes Miami a very attractive destination:

"

When it comes to a contest between the Raiders and the Dolphins, Ross has ultimate ace in the hole — the absence of state income taxes in Florida.  In California, the rate for the really rich is 13.3 percent.

So if Suh signs a deal that pays him $15 million per year in California, the Golden State will withhold $1.995 million in taxes.  Per year.  In Florida, the Sunshine State will take the grand total of zero dollars and zero cents from Suh’s game checks.

"

The Dolphins are one of those teams that continues to flirt with the postseason but ultimately misses out. Perhaps signing Suh could ignite Miami and make the difference.

DeMarco Murray

Although running backs are becoming increasingly more interchangeable, the Dallas Cowboys would be foolish to let DeMarco Murray walk this offseason. He's stayed relatively healthy over the last two years and is fresh off the best season of his career.

Since he was taken in the third round of the 2011 draft, Murray has been a bit of a bargain for Dallas:

This year, he's going to get paid.

According to ESPN's Ed Werder, Murray will make every effort to remain with the Cowboys. He reported that the 27-year-old would re-sign with Dallas as long as the team doesn't make a low-ball offer.

Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones has already publicly said that he wants Murray back for 2015 and beyond, per ESPNDallas.com's Todd Archer:

"

"We want DeMarco enough that I've got some serious flexibility in my bracket," Jones said, referencing how much the Cowboys might want to spend.

As much as the Cowboys want Dez Bryant for a long time, Jones said the Cowboys "want Murray for his career as well."

"The only reason to have any equivocation on that is that this is pro football and we have limitations on what you can allocate to any position or allocate to your football team," Jones said.

"

While Jones and the Cowboys are limited by their cap space, they'll likely find enough to convince Murray to stay. Jones doesn't often lose his marquee players in free agency, and if he wants Murray, he'll make the financial details work out somehow.

Darrelle Revis

You have to envy Darrelle Revis. He'll either be well-compensated by the reigning Super Bowl champions or he'll be compensated to an even better extent by the New York Jets.

Speaking on Adam Schein of Mad Dog Sports Radio (via NESN.com's Doug Kyed), ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Jets and Patriots are likely the two teams vying for Revis' signature:

"

I don't know what New England is going to offer him, I really don't. Say it's $10 million, $11 million a year, $12 million, and you're the Jets and offer $15 (million), $16 million a year. Worth it to go back to New York to finish your career for a few million dollars more where you would be saluted as a king? I don't know. It's a question of what you find most important, what you value most in your life and what you want to do with your career.

"

Revis has a Super Bowl ring in his pocket, so he might not value winning so highly that he'll take a not so insignificant pay cut.

Still, it's hard to see him spurning the Patriots for a few million a year. The 29-year-old might be a returning king in New York City, but there's no telling when the Jets will be a viable contender.

According to Ben Volin of The Boston Glove, Revis has valued winning ahead of getting more money to play for a bad team. As long as New England doesn't insult him and make a low-ball offer, he should remain a Patriot in 2015.
