Jerome Simpson to 49ers: Latest Contract Details, Comments and Reaction

Adam WellsMar 5, 2015

The San Francisco 49ers have been busy trying to supplement their roster. Their latest move is to upgrade their receiving corps with Jerome Simpson, who sat out last season after spending the previous two years with the Minnesota Vikings.

According to the 49ers' official Twitter account, Simpson has agreed to a two-year contract:

Simpson does come with off-field baggage, as he was suspended for three games in 2014 after being arrested for a DUI in November 2013. He was cited for misdemeanor charges of marijuana possession, driving with an open bottle and violating limited license restriction in July 2014.

The Vikings cut Simpson on September 18 after he served two games of his three-game suspension, so the 49ers may have to do without the veteran wideout for one game when next season begins.

When Simpson last played, he was a dynamic weapon for Minnesota. He finished 2013 with 726 yards on 48 receptions. His speed to stretch the field is an element the 49ers have been trying to find for years.

As long as Simpson can stay out of trouble and work his way into the starting lineup, this could be a solid under-the-radar move by the 49ers.

They were going to need help at wide receiver anyway, especially with Michael Crabtree being a free agent, so taking a chance on a low-cost player with some history of success makes sense for this franchise.
