NFL Free Agents 2015: Best Fits for Top Stars on Market

Timothy RappMar 5, 2015

Some pending free agents would probably be better off staying put when it comes to determining where they'd fit best.

Darrelle Revis and Devin McCourty should probably stay in New England. Jeremy Maclin is perfect in Philadelphia's scheme. Byron Maxwell has the support of the Legion of Boom in Seattle.

Some of those players may test free agency, but they're best advised to stay where they are.

But what about those players who could find great fits with other teams? Where should a few of the top players consider going, based solely on the scheme they would be joining?

Let's break it down.

Ndamukong Suh: Jacksonville Jaguars

I know what you are thinking. You are thinking that the Jaguars are still pretty far off from being contenders, and that Suh would be going from a playoff team to a team that might be stuck picking in the top five for another season or two.

But let's be honest: If Suh leaves Detroit, there's a pretty good chance he'll head to a team that isn't in the talk for the Super Bowl just yet. Maybe if the Indianapolis Colts pony up the cash to land him, that won't be the case. Maybe the Philadelphia Eagles cleared out a ton of cap space for Suh, though I'm not so sure he would be a great scheme fit.

But it's more likely that a team like the Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders or Jaguars will make a play for him. And Suh is an absolutely perfect fit for Gus Bradley's aggressive, defensive style. He would be a terror in that system, under a coach focused on putting together a fearsome defense.

Miami remains the front-runner to land Suh, and the star defensive tackle could take the Dolphins to the next level. But in terms of a scheme fit, you have to think the Jaguars would be the best match.

Randall Cobb: Philadelphia Eagles

Let's get one thing out of the way: This almost assuredly won't happen.

Jeremy Maclin will still likely re-sign with the team, and the Eagles need to use their massive cap space to rebuild the defense, not add new toys to an already efficient offense.

But man, would this be fun, especially with LeSean McCoy headed to Buffalo, according to ESPN.com's Adam Shefter and Mike Rodak.

Cobb could line up all over the field for the Eagles, playing some running back, creating mismatches in the slot and even working out wide. Imagine the Birds running a stretch-option where the quarterback has the choice of handing off the ball, running it himself or tossing it out to the flat to Cobb, who could work his magic in space.

Chip Kelly would devise so many fun ways to use Cobb in his fast-paced, spread-option attack. Cobb will probably head to Oakland, but if he were choosing a new team based solely on the role he would have, Philadelphia would be the logical choice.

And the fun one, too.

Julius Thomas: Atlanta Falcons

Matt Ryan missed Tony Gonzalez in 2014. He would love Julius Thomas in 2015.

The Falcons would be wise to consider making a strong push for Thomas. He would give Ryan the big, athletic, dominant option in the red zone that the team really missed without Gonzalez. He would take pressure off Julio Jones, forcing teams to pick their poison between the talented receivers.

And of all the potential suitors for Thomas, there's a pretty good chance he won't find a better quarterback to pair with than Ryan. Atlanta has the weapons in the passing game to remain a dangerous passing team under new coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, and Thomas would be the cherry on top.

This fit makes so much sense that it almost has to happen.
