Marshall Traded to Jets

ESPN's Adam Schefter initially reported the trade on :

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reported that the trade would save the Bears a solid chunk of cash toward the cap:

Marshall took to Instagram with an assortment of posts to thank the Bears for his time in Chicago.

The Bears reportedly put Marshall, 30, on the trade block amid an effort to create a sea change in the Chicago locker room. Biggs indicated the team was seeking a mid-round pick in a move tied equally to salary-cap relief and avoiding internal strife.

The Bears signed that extension last spring with a different general manager and coaching staff in place, so some roster change was expected—even with players as talented as Marshall.

Traded to Chicago from Miami before the 2012 season, Marshall's first two years in the Windy City were the best of his career. He made 100 receptions in each campaign, scored a combined 23 touchdowns and earned his first All-Pro berth in 2012. Being reunited with Jay Cutler, with whom he thrived in Denver, seemed to motivate Marshall in a way being with the Dolphins had not.

All that came crashing down in 2014. Battling injuries all season long, Marshall was limited to 13 games and was markedly less effective when on the field. He finished with 61 receptions for 721 yards, both his worst totals since his rookie campaign. Coupled with Alshon Jeffery's ascent to Chicago's clear No. 1 receiver, Marshall went from Pro Bowler to second banana on his own depth chart in a matter of 12 months.

Marshall also became publicly critical of his own teammates, notably saying he would have "buyer's remorse" on Cutler's onerous contract if he were the Bears, per Conor Orr of NFL.com. Cutler signed a seven-year, $126.7 million contract last offseason but continued to struggle with interceptions amid Chicago's nightmare 5-11 campaign.

Those comments and Marshall's longstanding reputation as being an outspoken personality led to no given assurances that he'd return for 2015.

“I definitely love Chicago, but I definitely understand it’s a business on both ends,” Marshall said, per Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune. “For me, I want to win. The organization wants to win. (Owner) Mrs. (Virginia) McCaskey wants to win, so, definitely aligned there. But there’s a business side on both ends, and I get that.”

It'll be interesting to see how Marshall meshes with Geno Smith. Cutler, despite his flaws, has really been the only signal-caller to coax the highest possible potential out of the Central Florida product.

As was the case in Miami, Marshall is being acquired to revitalize a shaky receiving corps. We'll have to see if he's more successful this time around sans Cutler.
