Adam Caplan of ESPN reported on March 3 that the Philadelphia Eagles were expected to release Cole within the next 24 hours "after both sides could not agree on a revised contract, a league source confirmed."
Cole took to Twitter to say farewell, saying "Taking trip to new hunting grounds that I'll have chance at a trophy of a lifetime!"
Cole was never the Eagles' best tackler on the field or their biggest playmaker, but he was a durable and reliable piece of the linebacker depth. He played in all 16 games in six of his 10 seasons for the Eagles and never appeared in fewer than 14.
CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora added that several teams will be interested in a player of Cole's quality and that the New York Jets could be one of them because of his connection to head coach Todd Bowles.
That type of consistency is rare in the injury-filled NFL, and he provided much-needed depth for the team as it battled for the NFC East crown.
Cole is 32 years old and may only have a couple more productive seasons in the tank. However, whichever team signs him will know it can rely on him to hit the field every Sunday.
