Bernard Pollard Released by Titans: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Tim KeeneyMar 2, 2015

Bernard Pollard has received his wish: He is no longer a member of the Tennessee Titans.

The team confirmed his release Tuesday and announced it had claimed outside linebacker Jonathan Massaquoi off waivers in a corresponding move.

The Tennessean's Jim Wyatt first reported the news that Pollard had asked the team for his release and that he'd been let go.

Shortly after those details surfaced, he confirmed the news with a goodbye to the city:

Pollard appeared in just five games last year before a ruptured Achilles tendon ended his season in early October. In 2013, his first year with Tennessee, he started all 16 games, recording 99 combined tackles, three interceptions and 10 pass deflections.

Coming off a serious injury is obviously a concern, but Pollard, who has started over 100 games in his career, should have no trouble finding a job somewhere. Chris Burke of Sports Illustrated shared his take on Pollard's value:

For Tennessee, the move makes sense.

Not only did Pollard want out, but his release also frees up $3.2 million in salary-cap space with only $425,000 in dead money, per OverTheCap.com. The Titans, who were already in the top 10 in cap space, now have even more money to play with over the next month.

Should the team want an in-house replacement for Pollard, it will likely have to re-sign free agent George Wilson, who started 10 games at strong safety last year. Wilson is a savvy veteran but has a diminishing skill set.

If the Titans look elsewhere, Devin McCourty, the brother of current Titan Jason, is a potentially intriguing candidate who has been discussed
