NXT Is Fueling Current Divas Movement

WWE is unfair to its Divas.

At least that's the narrative that's sweeping across social media, catching the attention Vince McMahon, Stephanie McMahon and everybody in between. 

There's a women's liberation movement in WWE, but it couldn't have come at a worse time for the veterans. The NXT Divas, not their main roster counterparts, are primed to reap the rewards.

Divas getting their time cut on Raw and being treated as secondary acts is old hat. Since the end of the Attitude Era, the Divas have precipitously declined in prestige. The WWE Network has several instances where current and former talent speak lovingly about the night Trish Stratus and Lita main evented Raw.

But suddenly, the Divas division is pretty much a sideshow.

Two weeks ago, Paige, a former two-time Divas champion, worked a match against Summer Rae while dressed like one of Adam Rose's Rosebuds.

It was a storyline fit for a haphazard division. The Bella Twins broke into Paige's locker room and stole her gear. This forced Paige to waltz to the ring in Lady Gaga's prom dress. Paige won quickly, but the match was hardly about the wrestling.

Five days earlier, the NXT Divas submitted another instant classic during NXT TakeOver: Rival. Charlotte, Sasha Banks, Bayley and Becky Lynch managed to make a Fatal 4-Way the most entertaining match on the card. This appeared to cause the unrest that quickly grew into what is now known as #GiveDivasAChance.

F4WOnline.com (h/t WrestlingInc.com) reported discontent in the WWE locker room due to the fact that the NXT Superstars and (especially) Divas are allowed to have lengthy matches. Currently, the NXT and WWE Divas don't even compare. It's very possible that an NXT Divas match will compete for match of the year.

Nothing among the WWE Divas is even close.

Both Vince and Stephanie McMahon directly addressed the current movement. Change, at least in the short term while this issue is hot, will soon follow.

Unfortunately, the WWE Divas are putting a nail in their own coffin. It was a talented crop of NXT Divas who inspired the #GiveDivasAChance movement. Sure, many WWE Divas feel they can put on similar performances, but fans are ready to move on. The NXT Divas are younger, better and stronger. If all that talent were held to 30-second matches, this current women's liberation movement would become a riot.

By the time WWE is ready to take women's wrestling seriously, many current NXT Divas will be called up to take the spots of lesser performers.

The top NXT Divas have all honed their craft for months, sometimes years, in the WWE development system. Almost every spotlighted NXT Diva is ready for prime time. Female wrestling is already getting its chance.

By the time change happens, many current WWE Divas will be on the wrong side of it.
