Matt Hasselbeck and Colts Agree on New Contract: Latest Details, Reaction
The Indianapolis Colts won't need to look for a backup quarterback anytime soon. The team announced Thursday that it re-signed Matt Hasselbeck. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport noted that the deal is reportedly for $3 million.
In two years in Indianapolis, Hasselbeck has appeared in seven games, going 37-of-56 for 431 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Although the 39-year-old's on-field role for the Colts has been somewhat minimal, NFL Network's Albert Breer believes he's been instrumental in Andrew Luck's development:

Stephen Holder of The Indianapolis Star was also a fan of the move:
Seeing Hasselbeck come back for at least another year isn't a big surprise. Back in December, he revealed that he had no plans on retiring and that he desired a return to Indianapolis, per Holder:
"[My wife Sarah and I] haven't talked about it or thought about it, really. We would almost have to have the talk if I was considering being done. But I'm not really considering being done. We've talked about what if we weren't in Indy next year. We really like Indy. It would be hard for our kids not to be Indy with sports and school. But they also know that's the bad part about my job. That can happen.
"
Re-signing Hasselbeck isn't the kind of move that will put the Colts over the top. However, he's an experienced signal-caller and offers some security in the event Luck goes down with a serious injury. That's obviously a worst-case scenario, but Hasselbeck's presence would somewhat soften the blow.
Having a capable backup is always a nice luxury, especially for a team angling for the Super Bowl.
