Peyton Hillis Released by Giants: Latest Details, Comments, Reaction

Tim DanielsFeb 25, 2015

The New York Giants have released veteran running back Peyton Hillis. He appeared in 16 games over the past two seasons with the organization. The team announced the decision on Wednesday.

Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports 1 first reported the news.

Hillis was placed on injured reserve back in November after suffering his second concussion in as many seasons. Dan Graziano of ESPN passed along comments from him at the time about going through another setback just as he tried to carve out a larger role for himself.

"It's tough," Hillis said. "You know, because you're right, I've been trying to get my career going again and it's just been really tough because I haven't had a lot of opportunities. But, I've been blessed to be on the team. It's crazy how one hit can take me out for the rest of the year. That's very depressing."

The 29-year-old back had one standout season with the Cleveland Browns in 2010. He tallied over 1,650 total yards and 13 touchdowns. He wasn't able to match that type of production in any other year during stops with three other teams, including the Giants.

What the future holds is very much a mystery at this point. He will need to get clearance from doctors showing he's back to full strength after the concussion issues. Only then would teams consider him based on his remaining football ability should he choose to continue his career.

Hillis did average better than four yards per carry in limited duty for the Giants last season. He could still help a team as a short-yardage power back. As for New York, the tandem of Rashad Jennings and Andre Williams will continue to lead the rushing attack.
