Arsenal Transfer News: Paul Pogba Link Continues, Godfred Donsah Rumours Emerge

Rory MarsdenFeb 24, 2015

Arsenal continue to be linked with Juventus star Paul Pogba, with reports suggesting the Gunners are lining up a summer move for the Frenchman.

According to CalcioMercato.com (h/t Jamie Sanderson of Metro), Arsenal are prepared to "pay any amount" to sign the 21-year-old midfielder, and £80 million is the currently rumoured figure.

Since joining Juve from Manchester United in 2012, Pogba has become arguably the brightest talent in football, with his physicality, passing ability and acumen both in attack and defence making him a top-class central midfielder.

He is being linked with a swathe of Europe's top clubs—including Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and United—and Bleacher Report UK's Matteo Bonetti believes the Serie A outfit will indeed cash in on him this summer:

If that is the case, the race for Pogba's signature will be the story of the summer transfer window, and Sanderson suggests Arsenal are in a good position to win said contest.

In recent years, the Gunners have seemingly loosened their purse strings with the signings of Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, but despite the continuing links, the signing of Pogba is surely out of reach for Wenger.

Real, Chelsea, Manchester City and United—who are all linked with Pogba, per the Express' Ben Jefferson—all have significantly greater financial clout than Arsenal, and they will be able to offer Juve and their star player more attractive financial packages.

Equally, the Gunners may not even be in the Champions League next season, as they are currently locked in a fierce battle for a top-four Premier League spot which is by no means guaranteed.

L'Equipe recently speculated on whether the Premier League's new television deal—worth over £5 billion per PA Sport (h/t ESPN FC)—would see English clubs attract the world's best players, with Pogba mocked up in an Arsenal shirt, per France-based football writer Matt Spiro:

Certainly the France international would improve the Gunners hugely as a long-needed marshal in the middle of the park, but it seems an unlikely summer transfer with so many other massive clubs interested in Pogba.

Another central midfielder who is a more realistic target for Arsenal is Cagliari's Godfred Donsah, and the Ghanaian is reportedly being targeted by the Gunners, per the London Evening Standard's Tom Collomosse

At just 18 years old, Donsah has shown enormous potential, and is being tracked by Tottenham and Manchester City also.

He has appeared 15 times in Serie A this season and has netted twice while providing one assist, per WhoScored.com.

Donsah is talented on the ball and provides good link-up play for those around him. He could also improve drastically under Wenger's tutelage.

Arsenal need added strength in the centre of the park—an area in which they have been arguably lacking since the days of Patrick Vieira—and with a Pogba deal unlikely, Donsah could be an exciting alternative.
