Updating Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 1st-Round Big Board Post-Combine

Luke EasterlingFeb 24, 2015

With the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine in the books, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are likely narrowing their focus with regard to the No. 1 overall pick.

Both Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota participated in throwing drills, showing off their skills as passers and impressing all who were in attendance. The Bucs are expected to spend the top selection on one of the two quarterbacks but with still two months remaining until the draft, nothing is set in stone.

It's still possible the Bucs could trade down from the pick, looking to stockpile additional selections they can use to address their many needs. The combine featured impressive performances from multiple pass-rushers, a few of whom Tampa Bay could target if they move down a few spots in the first round.

Who are the top five players that should be on the Bucs' radar with the top pick? Here's my take.

5. Alvin "Bud" Dupree, EDGE, Kentucky

1 of 5

If the Bucs end up trading down from the top pick and don't end up with either Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota, their focus should be on grabbing one of the stellar pass-rushers from this year's extremely deep class at the position.

High on that list should be Bud Dupree, who wowed scouts at the combine with an impressive display of athleticism for his size. At 6'4", 269 pounds, Dupree ran with the outside linebackers and still bested the entire group with a 4.56-second 40-yard dash, and posted the best vertical and broad jump as well.

He may have been listed as an outside linebacker, but Dupree has the size and skill set to be a perfect fit at defensive end in a 4-3 scheme. His film backs up the athleticism he showed at the combine, and he would merit serious consideration if the Bucs move down into the lower half of the top 10.

4. Dante Fowler, EDGE, Florida

2 of 5

Much like Bud Dupree, Dante Fowler put on a show of his own at the combine, showing impressive speed and athleticism for his size.

Fowler is my top edge-rusher in this class, thanks to his relentless motor and knack for blowing up plays in the backfield, both against the run and pass. He's an explosive, versatile defender who is athletic enough to even drop back into coverage if needed, giving a defensive coordinator the flexibility to move him all around the defense.

A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., Fowler may not be a huge fan of playing for the team who he saw plenty of growing up, but he could end up donning the Pewter & Red if the Bucs move down a few spots in the first round.

3. Leonard Williams, DL, USC

3 of 5

Thought by many to be the best overall talent in this year's draft, Leonard Williams is a dynamic defender who can wreak havoc in any scheme. Known for his freakish athletic ability, Williams did nothing but reinforce that with his combine performance.

Williams is scheme-versatile, with the ability to play the 5-technique in a 3-4 or slide inside to either defensive tackle spot in a 4-3.

Many Bucs fans might cringe at the possibility of passing on a franchise quarterback with the top pick, especially to take a player at one of the team's deepest positions. That said, it wouldn't be completely shocking to see a defensive-minded head coach like Lovie Smith opt for a playmaker on that side of the ball over a risky quarterback.

2. Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon

4 of 5

Marcus Mariota has been touted as the better athlete of the top two quarterbacks in this year's draft, and he proved that to be true with his showing at the combine. He led the position with a 4.52-second 40-yard dash.

Some may have been surprised at how well Mariota threw the ball in Indy, but the film shows he's a better passer than many seem to realize.

The debate between Mariota and Jameis Winston will likely rage on for the remaining two months leading up to the draft, but at the moment, last year's Heisman Trophy winner is trailing by a decent margin. However, if the Bucs' decision-makers end up unable to stomach Winston's off-field concerns, Mariota's no slouch of a consolation prize.

1. Jameis Winston, QB, Florida State

5 of 5

The combine was Jameis Winston's opportunity to wow NFL personnel executives with both his on-field skills and his ability to handle the media scrutiny regarding his off-field issues. On all fronts, the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner came up big.

Winston elected to throw with the quarterbacks, and he didn't disappoint, showing a shorter, quicker release than he'd previously had on film. He handled his press conferences like a seasoned vet, and reports from his interviews with teams had plenty of personnel types raving about his football intelligence, per B/R's Mike Freeman.

You can bet the Bucs will do more than their due diligence regarding Winston's off-field concerns, but from what both general manager Jason Licht and head coach Lovie Smith said at the combine, it's clear to me that he's currently the top name on their board.
