NFL Combine 2015: Drills Schedule and Prospects to Watch

Tim KeeneyFeb 19, 2015

The draft combine has begun in Indianapolis, but things don't start getting really fun until the prospects get onto the field for the drills and workouts.

While interviews and measurements can provide some really good information, nothing can affect a player's stock like the 40-yard dash, broad jump, shuttle run or vertical jump. What a time to be alive!

Let's take a look at when each position group is set to hit the field for the drills, as well as some players to keep an eye on during the process.

Shane Ray, DE, Missouri

Shane Ray plays like he knows the snap count and opposing left tackles don't. Exhibit A, courtesy of Grantland's Robert Mays:

That's a mesmerizing first step. Ray has unbelievable explosion off the snap, and he's able to maintain that speed. According to NFL.com's Mike Huguenin, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year can reportedly run a 4.44 40, which is a little silly for a player with his size.

But while his athleticism is off the charts (he also has a 42-inch vertical and can bench press 430 pounds, per Huguenin), Ray is also an intriguing player at the combine because of something that could potentially hurt his stock: his measurements.

NFL.com's Daniel Jeremiah, via NFL.com's Chase Goodbread, put it simply:

"

I'm anxious to see how big he is, because they list him at 6-2, 245around thereand I've heard from scouts that have gone in there that he's going to measure in around 6-1. He's not very long, and he's not very heavy. That could be one to keep an eye on because on tape he's outstanding, but if he comes in a little bit smaller than everyone expected that could hurt his stock a little bit.

"

Ray may just put on a show and disappoint all at the same time.

Phillip Dorsett, WR, Miami

If there is someone who's going to break Chris Johnson's 40-yard dash record of 4.24 seconds, it's Phillip Dorsett.

According to the Miami Herald's Susan Miller Degnan, the Miami wide receiver set a school record with a time of 4.21, but Hurricanes strength and conditioning coach Andreu Swasey has clocked him at a blazing 4.18.

And as Alessandro Biondi noted, he makes it look easy:

“He’s definitely explosive,” said Swasey. “Dorsett has gotten so much faster. It’s amazing what he has done.”

Dorsett, at 5'10" and 183 pounds with inconsistent hands, isn't exactly a complete receiver. As such, his stock is somewhere around the second or third round. But in Indianapolis, he'll remind teams of his game-changing speed.

Arik Armstead, DL, Oregon

Let's see, what's the best way to put this? Arik Armstead is not a normal human being.

The former Oregon defensive lineman stands at 6'8" and 290 pounds. That alone is imposing, but he also possesses the quickness, agility and leaping ability that allowed him to play on the Ducks basketball team for a short amount of time. He's not going to break any records, but to see a player his size grade out very well in the 40 and vertical will be undeniably impressive.

NFL writer Joe Goodberry offered a look at his quickness and power all rolled into one impressive play:

Armstead didn't live up to his potential at Oregon, but his blend of size and athleticism will be something to behold this weekend.
