Mourinho Confirms Terry Will Receive New Deal

Friday, Feb. 20

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho talked about Terry's contract status at his Friday press conference, according to Simon Johnson of the London Evening Standard:

"

“John accepted the club’s policy that we go year-after-year, with a smile. He accepted the challenge and he won it last year and he is winning the challenge and the right to get one more year this season too.

“That is what the club wants, that’s what John wants and that is going to happen.”

Mourinho admitted he went to Sloane Street to buy an expensive pen to give to Eden Hazard to sign his five-and-a-half year contract recently, but said that won’t be necessary this time.

“John has signed so many contracts he can just use one of the plastic pens around here!” he joked.

Terry Says He Wants Extension

Wednesday, Feb. 18

Speaking about his contract status Wednesday, Terry indicated he would like to begin discussions about a new contract—though he acknowledged Chelsea have not approached him yet.

"No talks have happened yet, but we both respect each other's position," Terry said, per Tony Banks of Express. "There's more important players to deal with first, like Eden Hazard's (whose new five-year contract was finally signed last week). For me, that was the most important for the club."

Terry, 34, has been with Chelsea since moving to their youth club in 1995. A brief loan to Nottingham Forest exempted, he's been a regular fixture at Stamford Bridge ever since, establishing himself among the best players in club history. The 34-year-old centre-back was named UEFA Defender of the Year three times and has been at the head of three Premier League tables.

With Chelsea seven points removed from Manchester City, it's very likely Terry will be an integral part of his fourth league championship this season. An influx of cash and Jose Mourinho's leadership has returned Chelsea to an international power, and they are a legitimate contender to take Champions League as well.

Terry, who struggled at points last season, has been fully back to form in 2014-15. Michael Cox of ESPN FC named him Premier League's best central defender in January, spurring Chelsea's strong defensive effort on their way to a league-best plus-34 goal differential.

"Last year, I was maybe a bit nervous and edgy and hoping, and knocking on the door myself," Terry said. "I want to stay and hopefully my performances are showing that—and they want to keep me."

Because of their longstanding relationship, there is no major urgency to get the job done. It's unlikely Terry chooses to finish his career anywhere else regardless of what happens. It's become an increasingly in-vogue move for aging stars to take their talents stateside, but Chelsea and Terry are so intertwined that it's nearly impossible to envision him making a transition at this point.

Assuming both want to make it happen, a deal will get done eventually.
