Key Stats

Retired England international Michael Vaughan identified a key member of each team's batting order as a player to watch. He tabbed England star Jos Buttler and New Zealand's Kane Williamson as players who could enjoy a big day, per BBC Sport.

The latter could have a vital role to play after the Black Caps looked far from convincing with the bat during the win over Scotland. The hosts took the match by three wickets with 151 balls remaining.

But they only managed 146 runs, per ESPN Cricinfo. Williamson set the pace with a meagre 38. He's received a major endorsement from skipper Brendon McCullum, per the ESPN Cricinfo official Twitter feed:

If there was one good thing from the run tally, it was how New Zealand eclipsed Scotland's 142 mark in just under 25 overs. That guaranteed a net run rate of 2.624, according to ESPN Cricinfo writer Andrew Fidel Fernando.

He noted how run rate can be used to separate teams level on points at the end of the tournament's group stage. Even New Zealand coach Mike Hesson also highlighted the value of a good run rate: "We could have got the runs none down in 30 overs and been in a worse position than we've ended up in. Come quarter-final time, it's crucial where you finish."

If England is going to set a higher total for New Zealand to chase, it will need quick improvement from Moeen Ali. The Sky Sports Cricket Twitter feed detailed the drop in his production:

Of course, it won't help any member of England's batting order to be faced by Trent Boult. The lefty bowler was in inspired form for the Black Caps against the Scots, per the ESPN Cricinfo Twitter account:

England need improvement from both the batting order, as well as the fielding structure that yielded 342 runs in defeat to Australia. Steven Finn saw 71 runs earned off his deliveries. He'll need to pose a few more problems this time.

In fact, the entire England squad needs to show major improvement. But it won't be easy against a team playing in front of its own capital city fans.

England could quickly pay a steep price for their tough early fixtures.
