Nick Marshall Plans to Throw at 2015 NFL Combine: Latest Details and Reactions

Timothy RappFeb 18, 2015

Nick Marshall's future in the NFL may be as a cornerback, but the former Auburn star isn't completely giving up on the notion of playing quarterback at the next level.

Per Brandon Marcello of AL.com, Marshall will throw at the NFL Scouting Combine:

"

Former Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall will participate in quarterback drills and throw at the NFL Combine, according to a person familiar with the decision. Marshall was invited to the combine in Indianapolis despite moving to cornerback in January.

Marshall will participate in all quarterback drills. Several NFL teams are expected to pull him to the side and work through defensive back drills. He will not participate in on-the-field drills with the group of defensive backs invited to the combine.

Marshall's agent confirmed the report on Thursday, according to Chase Goodbread of NFL.com.

While Marshall's future at the next level seems to be at cornerback—and that was the position he played during the Senior Bowl—he has one last chance at the combine to show that he might have the chops to play the quarterback position.

Regardless of where he ends up, Marshall heads into the combine with a lot to prove.

"I've put in the work and I feel ready," Marshall told Chase Goodbread of NFL.com. "I can't wait to get there and show them my best."

Marshall finished his senior season with 2,532 passing yards, 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions, completing 60.8 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 798 yards and 11 touchdowns.

But Marshall, who played cornerback at Georgia his freshman year, seems to have NFL folks more excited about his potential at cornerback. Former Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets secondary coach Doug Graber certainly sees a future for Marshall at defensive back.

"Doug told me point blank, he's got an NFL skill set at corner. I believe that," Mike Mayock of the NFL Network said during a teleconference with reporters, per Goodbread. "I think this is an important week (at the NFL Scouting Combine) for him. I think he needs to run a good 40 and show he's got long speed."

Given how seamlessly Marshall has seemed to make the positional adjustment, it won't be a surprise if he does just that. Marshall may be throwing and working out with the quarterbacks at the combine, but most NFL teams will be mostly focusing on what he might bring to the table as a cornerback at the next level.
