Philip Rivers Injury Update: Chargers Star Won't Need Back Surgery

Mike ChiariFeb 10, 2015

Despite being hampered by a back injury during the second half of the 2014 season, San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will not undergo offseason surgery.

According to ESPN.com's Eric D. Williams, the five-time Pro Bowler revealed on 101 KGB FM radio in San Diego that his bulging disk should heal on its own.

"

At this point, the back injury is not requiring surgery. We'll kind of revisit it in a month or so. But everything is improving. I'm back to my regular workouts and running around. Me and my wife played a little tennis the other day. I've hit the golf ball a few times, so I'm actually on the up and up. So I'm pretty excited.

Although Rivers enjoyed a strong 2014 campaign overall with more than 4,200 passing yards and 31 touchdowns, his uneven play down the stretch contributed to the Bolts finishing 1-3 and missing out on the playoffs.

His back ailment certainly contributed to that, and it resulted in him sitting out the Pro Bowl as well, per SportsCenter:

Back problems are always somewhat concerning for a quarterback, especially when they are 33 years of age like Rivers. He has been extremely durable over the course of his career, though, having played in every regular season game for San Diego since the start of the 2006 season.

That certainly speaks to his toughness and determination, so there is reason to believe that the veteran will be ready to go by the time preparation for the 2015 season begins.

If the Chargers are going to do any type of damage in 2015, then Rivers will undoubtedly have to enjoy a productive and healthy campaign.
