South Carolina vs. UConn: Score and Twitter Reaction from 2015 Regular Season

Joseph ZuckerFeb 9, 2015

The battle for women's college basketball supremacy didn't quite live up to the hype, as the second-ranked Connecticut Huskies rolled to an 87-62 win over the No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks Monday night in Storrs, Connecticut.

Although South Carolina entered this game unbeaten, many wondered how the Gamecocks would perform inside Gampel Pavilion. Beating UConn is hard enough; beating UConn on the road is nearly impossible, especially when the team is this good.

South Carolina looked game in the first few minutes but quickly faded, finding no answer for UConn's inside-outside combination of Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Breanna Stewart.

Mosqueda-Lewis finished with 23 points and shot 5-of-6 from three-point range. Sports Illustrated's Richard Deitsch argued the senior star is unstoppable when playing at her peak:

Kerith Burke of SportsNet New York recounted one particular moment when Mosqueda-Lewis showed her ruthlessness:

Meanwhile, Stewart dominated down low, scoring 22 points. She added eight rebounds and five blocks. Michael Roth, a current MLB pitcher and South Carolina alumnus, felt that Stewart's post game is at a near transcendent level:

The Huskies continued what is a great record against the best competition. According to ESPN Stats & Info, they've won 17 of their 20 meetings when the Nos. 1 and 2 teams are pitted against one another:

The Cauldron's Katie Sharp provided the scoring margin for the last four games to fall under that umbrella:

UConn might occasionally stumble against a top-10 team, but when tested against the country's elite, Geno Auriemma's team almost always answers the call.

Early on in Monday's game, South Carolina looked undaunted by the atmosphere of Gampel Pavilion or the aura of invincibility that emanates from the Huskies.

Then, UConn went on a 13-0 run to grab a 10-point lead, 28-18. From that point forward, South Carolina could rarely get to within striking distance. The Huskies took a 47-31 advantage into halftime.

Despite what was a daunting deficit, South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley remained composed as she headed back to the locker room, per Ryan Bethea of TheBigSpur.com:

South Carolina started off the second half on a 7-0 run, trimming the deficit to 10 points, 47-37, and it looked like the Gamecocks might start giving UConn a game. But the Huskies offense took over again, and all of a sudden the lead was back up to 17 points with a little under 15 minutes left in the game.

From there, UConn cruised until the final buzzer. Despite South Carolina's brief signs of life to start each half, it was a comprehensive victory for the Huskies.

Auriemma praised both his team and South Carolina after the game, via David Caraviello of the postandcourier.com:

The Huskies have a bit of an easy run the rest of the way. Their next Top-25 opponent is South Florida a little less than a month from now.

The Gamecocks will have a few games to right the ship. They'll need to get back to their best soon, considering they will meet No. 6 Tennessee, No. 13 Mississippi State and No. 10 Kentucky to wrap up the regular season.
