Liverpool Transfer News: Jack Wilshere, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and More Rumours

Timothy RappFeb 9, 2015

With Liverpool now swimming around in a vault of New Balance money, the club's new kit sponsor, rumours have begun to run rampant about how Brendan Rodgers might use the giant transfer budget he'll potentially be granted this summer.

And as you might have already guessed, some of the rumours making the rounds are, well, a bit hard to believe.

The first one that will probably be extremely hard to wrap your head around is that the Reds could pursue Arsenal's Jack Wilshere this summer, per Rob Shepherd of the Daily Mail.

Shepherd suggests that Arsene Wenger has grown weary of Wilshere's off-field antics after he was photographed with a shisha pipe, though he is also wary of his injury history and the club could look to offload him for a £25 million fee.

Shepherd then notes that Liverpool could look to add Wilshere to replace Steven Gerrard or that West Ham would be interested in going all in for the young English international.

Yes, as Stan Collymore notes, if Wilshere isn't careful, he could get squeezed out of a spot on Arsenal's team. He needs to be fully focused.

But Arsenal aren't exactly brimming with box-to-box midfielders like Wilshere. They have plenty of purely creative options, yes, but Wilshere is a bit more versatile. While he does come in direct competition with Aaron Ramsey in that midfield role, the latter hasn't exactly impressed this season after his spectacular 2013-14 campaign.

Plus, Wilshere is among the young English guns Arsenal has kept together and marketed who include Theo Walcott, Kieran Gibbs and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

And even if the Gunners were willing to sell Wilshere, would they really sell him to a rival like Liverpool? Especially after things got heated before last season over the purported Luis Suarez transfer to Arsenal that never happened?

It's pretty hard to believe.

ISTANBUL, TURKEY - OCTOBER 22: Henrikh Mkhitaryan of Borussia Dortmund is challenged by Selcuk Inan of Galatasaray during UEFA Champions League Group D match between Galatasaray and Borussia Dortmund at Turk Telekom Arena on October 22, 2014 in Istanbul,

It's a bit more feasible that the Reds could look to raid Borussia Dortmund, the struggling Champions League club that is shockingly near the bottom of the Bundesliga table.

Reports in Germany suggest Ciro Immobile could be on the move to Liverpool this summer, per Jamie Sanderson of Metro, while Sanderson wrote in a different article that the Reds could be after Dortmund's Marco Reus and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, and Real Madrid's Karim Benzema. Of the three, the Mkhitaryan rumours appear to have the most legs.

"Henrikh wants to leave Dortmund at the end of the season," his agent, Mino Raiola, told Sanderson. "We will have to wait and see what we can do."

The Reus rumours, meanwhile, may be dismissed shortly as he is reportedly close to signing an extension with Dortmund, per Stephan Uersfeld of ESPN FC. And Benzema has been a major contributor at Real Madrid for a while now and is a favorite of Cristiano Ronaldo, so it's hard to imagine him departing any time soon.

Liverpool will surely be busy this summer, and they will absolutely be linked to big names around Europe. It's just hard to imagine them bringing aboard the biggest names they are currently being linked to at the moment.
