Packers Reportedly Making Coaching Staff Shakeup
Sunday, Feb. 8
Following a disastrous end to the Green Bay Packers' season, head coach Mike McCarthy has made some changes.
And it starts with himself.
According to sources cited by ESPN.com's Rob Demovsky, McCarthy is considering giving up play-calling duties, most likely to current offensive coordinator Tom Clements. Green Bay radio station WDUZ, via NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, reported that there would also be a couple of in-house promotions:
As the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Tom Silverstein noted, nothing is final:
McCarthy was under fire following the Packers' NFC Championship Game loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Green Bay let a big lead slip away late in that game, and many felt that McCarthy became too conservative with his play-calling down the stretch.
Even quarterback Aaron Rodgers, via ESPN's Jason Wilde, didn't seem too thrilled about the fourth-quarter game plan:
That said, McCarthy has been at the helm since 2006, calling the plays for some of the most explosive attacks over the past decade. Since he was hired, Green Bay has finished in the top 10 in eight out of nine seasons, per Football-Reference.com.
Bleacher Report's Jason Cole and Sports Illustrated's Aaron Nagler argued that the play-calling isn't to blame:
The Packers hardly need an offensive shakeup, and regardless of whether changes are made, it's hard to imagine this team not continuing to put up handfuls of points.
Nevertheless, losses such as Green Bay's often call for some kind of restructuring. At the very least, this is a move that would allow McCarthy to be more closely involved in other aspects of the job.
