The Boston Red Sox have bolstered the future of their pitching rotation by signing southpaw Wade Miley to a new contract.

Miley had served as a solid starter for the Arizona Diamondbacks over the past three seasons. He was traded to Boston in December but needed to reach a deal with the Red Sox to avoid arbitration.

Since making the National League All-Star team in 2012, when he finished with a strong 16-11 record, Miley has gone a combined 18-22. Part of the problem was lackluster run support; Arizona was just 25th in MLB this past year in runs scored.

After posting a 3.5 WAR during his career-best 2012 campaign, though, Miley's rating in that category has dropped from a respective 1.3 to 0.8 in the seasons since, per Baseball-Reference.com.

Boston needed a proven veteran like Miley to add depth to its staff, which now includes new additions Rick Porcello (through a trade) and Justin Masterson (through free agency). The club has totally revamped its rotation following the departures of Jon Lester, John Lackey and Jake Peavy.

Clay Buchholz has been promising at times but also inconsistent, so it will be up to him, Miley and the other newcomers to help the Red Sox turn things around after they missed the playoffs in 2014.
