NFL Combine Invitees 2015: Full List of Players

Joseph ZuckerFeb 6, 2015

As one of the biggest stops on the road to the NFL draft, the 2015 scouting combine could go a long way toward solidifying many players' respective draft stocks.

Each and every year, you see a small handful of college stars shoot up draft boards because they post an obscene time in the 40-yard dash or blow scouts and coaches away on the bench press. Dri Archer was one of the biggest winners in 2014, running a 4.26-second 40 and parlaying that into a third-round selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Of course, the combine isn't the be-all and end-all for the draft process. A strong combine performance can't completely erase what a player did on the field.

Does Dorial Green-Beckham Do Anything to Offset His Red Flags?

Few players in this draft are more polarizing than Dorial Green-Beckham. In terms of pure talent, he's one of the best wide receivers in an otherwise shallow pool of talent. When you look at all of his off-field issues, he could be a third- or fourth-rounder.

Bleacher Report's Matt Miller tried to encapsulate in one tweet all of the pitfalls behind drafting DGB:

Although Green-Beckham is still a bit of a work in progress with his route running, he's a home run threat every time he touches the ball. He also has the ability to outjump just about any defensive back, making him impossible to stop at times, as Mike Loyko of NEPatriotsDraft.com pointed out:

The combine won't be the ultimate proving ground for the former Missouri and Oklahoma wideout. It can't possibly erase his past.

However, if he can put up impressive times in his workouts and look strong during the WR drills, teams might be more willing to make the gamble. Previous drafts have shown that head coaches and general managers won't hesitate to take the risk on a player with a high enough ceiling.

The converse is that a poor combine showing might only scare even more scouts and coaches off. Perhaps a year away from competitive football served to erode some of his skills. In addition, the Cleveland Browns' problems with Josh Gordon might be coming at the exact wrong time for DGB.

Green-Beckham will likely be one of the most highly scrutinized players in Indianapolis.

Which, If Any, Quarterbacks Emerge Outside Top Two?

MORGANTOWN, WV - OCTOBER 18: Bryce Petty #14 of the Baylor Bears drops back to pass in the first half against the West Virginia Mountaineers during the game on October 18, 2014 at Mountaineer Field in Morgantown, West Virginia. (Photo by Justin K. Aller

It's almost a consensus that Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota are the top two quarterbacks in this year's draft class. Beyond Mariota and Winston, the quality of the talent pool falls off a cliff.

Brett Hundley, Bryce Petty, Sean Mannion, Shane Carden and Garrett Grayson are all kind of lumped together as potential mid-round picks.

The latter four all went to Mobile, Alabama, for the Senior Bowl, but the trip did little to help their draft stock. Miller walked away disappointed:

"

Ugh. This was the worst group of senior quarterbacks I've seen during my time covering the Senior Bowl. All six quarterbacks struggled to make simple throws with ball placement, velocity and touch. Even simple things like taking the snap was a struggle.

I came into the week trying to separate Bryce Petty, Garrett Grayson and Shane Carden for my No. 4 quarterback spot and will go home even more unimpressed with the senior class of passers.

"

Last year, Blake Bortles earned rave reviews at the combine. Teams had been fairly high on him at that point anyway, but his performance in Indianapolis certainly played a role in the Jacksonville Jaguars drafting him with the third overall pick.

Petty, Mannion, Carden and/or Grayson probably won't all of a sudden shoot into the first round with a strong combine, but they could morph from a Day 3 pick into a Day 2 pick, which wouldn't be an insignificant rise.

Of the aforementioned group, Hundley is the only one who could realistically go in the first round. Even that might be a stretch, unless a quarterback-needy team falls in love and moves up from the second round.

Adam Kilgore of The Washington Post suggested that Hundley's decision to skip the Senior Bowl will likely come back to haunt him by citing recent examples of draftees who did the same thing:

"

Last winter, Alabama’s A.J. McCarron stayed away from Mobile and dropped to the fifth round while Derek Carr, a comparable player at the start of the process, went in the second round and became the Oakland Raiders’ starter as a rookie. The previous year, Geno Smith skipped the Senior Bowl and landed in the second round, while EJ Manuel jumped from a projected third-rounder into the first round after his Senior Bowl performance.

"

Not coincidentally, Hundley has the most to gain in Indianapolis after starting 2014 as the consensus No. 3 quarterback in this class.

The UCLA star revealed on NFL Network's Super Bowl Live (via NFL.com's Bryan Fischer) that he wasn't fully healthy when the event rolled around.

"The main decision was about being healthy and being at 100 percent in order to play in those games," Hundley said. "After the bowl game, I sat down and talked with my agent, my family, and I just wasn't there yet. I think that's the thing you have to think about before the game."

Hundley has all of the physical tools necessary to thrive in the NFL. The combine should be a great showcase for his abilities and an opportunity for him to assuage any fears teams might have that he's not ready.
