Andre-Pierre Gignac Late Liverpool Transfer Target, Rickie Lambert Exit Rumours

Rory MarsdenFeb 2, 2015

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers could still be set to make some moves in the January transfer window with Marseille's Andre-Pierre Gignac reportedly a late target to bolster the Reds attack.

According to Alex Harris in the Daily Star, the Anfield outfit are looking to make a deadline-day move for the 29-year-old France international in order to pip Arsenal to his signature—Arsene Wenger having been lining up a summer swoop.

Striker Gignac has been in impressive form in Ligue 1 this season, scoring 14 goals in 23 games, per WhoScored.com, and he would be a vast improvement on Rodgers' current forward options in Rickie Lambert, Mario Balotelli and Fabio Borini.

Although Daniel Sturridge has recently returned from long-term injury, Liverpool have failed miserably to replace the departed Luis Suarez, but Gignac could potentially be the answer given his prowess in front of goal.

He is an impressive goalscorer and has played no small part for Marseille as they continue to fight for the Ligue 1 title, and he could bring a different dimension to Liverpool's play given his aerial prowess, per WhoScored.com's Ben McAleer:

However, Sport Witness indicates that reports surrounding Liverpool's interest in Gignac have not been forthcoming in the French media, perhaps a sign that a deal is unlikely:

Gignac's current contract at Marseille expires at the end of the season so Liverpool could well look to go in for him again in the summer when they will be able to sign him for free.

Lambert is reportedly a potential candidate to depart Anfield in the current window having only arrived in June.

The Englishman has played mostly from the bench under Rodgers, scoring just two goals in 17 league appearances, per WhoScored, and Harris reports that Hull City are interested in taking Lambert on loan.

However, Aston Villa now seem to be leading the race to sign the 32-year-old striker, per the Liverpool Echo's James Pearce, Paul Lambert being desperately in need of a goalscorer:

Lambert completed his dream move to his boyhood club in the summer, but it has not quite turned out the way he likely would have wanted it to.

A move to Villa could well be a decent switch for the former Southampton man as he is only likely to move further down the pecking order if new forwards are brought in at Liverpool.

But whether the Reds will let him go in the current window is another matter, as he provides vital cover for an injury-prone Sturridge.
