Triple H Is the Perfect Antagonist for Sting at WrestleMania 31

Donald WoodJan 30, 2015

There is a portion of the WWE Universe that was dead set on Sting fighting The Undertaker at WrestleMania 31, but the truth is that Triple H is the perfect antagonist for the wrestling legend’s debut match with the company.

Sting made his first appearance in the WWE at Survivor Series by attacking Triple H and helping Dolph Ziggler and his team earn the victory, effectively removing The Authority from power.

After John Cena was forced to re-hire Triple H and Stephanie McMahon, Sting once again made his presence felt by distracting The Authority, allowing Cena to earn the jobs back for fired Superstars Ziggler, Erick Rowan and Ryback.

With the groundwork for a WrestleMania match successfully laid, there is now legitimate contempt between Triple H and Sting.

This feud works on several different levels. For those wrestling fans who enjoy the history of the sport, Triple H was one of the faces of the WWE during the Attitude Era and was a major player in the war against the WCW. Add in the fact that Sting was one of the top faces in WCW while Triple H was one of the top heels in the WWE, and this is a battle for the ages.

This goes even deeper, though. One of the reasons Sting didn’t sign with the WWE in the past was the mistreatment of former WCW stars. There have been stories for years that Triple H was one of the biggest offenders when it came to burying talent from other companies, and the potential match against Sting at WrestleMania will have old-school fans tuning in to the product once again.

The WWE has heavily promoted The Monday Night War: WWE vs. WCW documentary on the WWE network over the last several months, and it would be smart to tie this feud into that program. Using the history between WCW and WWE as a jumping-off point, the company could explain Sting’s hatred for The Authority.

As he showed in WCW when he went from the Surfer Sting character to The Crowe Sting, the 55-year-old has always been about standing up for what’s right. After he eventually stood up to the nWo in WCW, it became clear that Sting was focused on fighting the corrupt people in charge of the company.

Essentially, the WWE would be reviving that storyline with The Authority taking the role of the nWo. Most fans will agree that Sting’s interaction with the nWo was some of the most entertaining programming in wrestling history, so rehashing an angle along those lines is a smart game plan.

Triple H is arguably the top heel in the company right now due to the manipulative things he has done as the on-screen authority figure. While he isn’t as active in the ring as much as he once was, his role in The Authority holding down all the top faces suits him well. He has thrived in his position, and he understands how to get a reaction from the fans by mixing in just enough truth to make what he says hurt.

With Sting clearly the face heading into WrestleMania, there is no doubt Triple H will really kick his heel actions into high gear in order to get the WWE Universe fully invested in this match.

Besides the perfect storyline fit between Triple H and Sting, this will also be one of the best matches imaginable for the former WCW world champion’s debut. Triple H has proved he is one of the best in-ring storytellers in the business by putting on show-stealing matches with The Undertaker, Brock Lesnar, Shawn Michaels and many other top stars in the business.

While Triple H has a brutal style in the ring, he is one of the safest workers in the business. He understands the nuances of working a match of this magnitude and knows how to work with older athletes who don’t have the physical ability they once did.

At 55 years old, there is no doubt that Sting has slowed down, but Triple H will understand and help tell a story. Add in the fact that Sting is a master in the ring with decades of big-match experience, and the story the men tell has the potential to go down in history as one of the most entertaining WrestleMania bouts in history.

After watching Daniel Bryan and Triple H steal the show last year at WrestleMania, the magnitude of Sting and Triple H going toe-to-toe on the biggest stage in the WWE will make this the best possible match for the 2015 event.

With Sting almost guaranteed to steal the victory, the hope is that this will eventually lead to Sting fighting The Undertaker at WrestleMania 32 in Dallas.
